Lt. José R. Cantú Jr. is not just the founder of PATROL MODE CONTROL TACTICS—he is the embodiment of its mission.
With over 19 years in active law enforcement and a lifelong dedication to martial arts, José created PATROL MODE CONTROL TACTICS to bring something the profession urgently needs: advanced defensive tactics training—adapted, tested, and taught by someone who’s worn the badge, made the arrests, and faced the pressure. As a certified defensive tactics instructor, he brings first-hand knowledge of what works when it matters most.
I began training in Shotokan Karate when I was just 9 years old. Decades later, during a mixed martial arts class, I faced a humbling reality—I wasn’t as in control as I thought. That moment exposed gaps in my technique and pushed me toward Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, where I went on to train, certify, and eventually teach.
That experience completely shifted my mindset:

I became a certified defensive tactics instructor, blending the art of control with the operational demands of policing. Today, this fusion of martial arts expertise and law enforcement experience allows me to teach officers how to maintain control, protect themselves, and safeguard the communities they serve—without relying on unnecessary force.
